One nation that takes sustainability seriously is Spain. Spain has long placed an emphasis on ecotourism, and they consistently achieve their objectives through safeguarding their environment, animals, and many other things. Plastics are readily available, affordable materials that can be used for a variety of purposes. Despite the fact that they have many benefits, the use of so much plastic endangers the ecosystem. Annual increases in global plastic manufacturing over the past few decades have caused an ever-growing flow of plastic waste around the planet. Almost the past ten years, Spain has created over two million tonnes of plastic waste annually. Even while improvements can still be made, notably in the area of recycling, progress has already been made.
According to the research report “Spain Plastic Waste Management Market Overview, 2028, published by Bonafide Research, the market is projected to grow over 5% CAGR by 2023-28. Based on service type, which comprises collection and transportation, recycling, incineration, and landfills. In Spain, 56.7% of waste is dumped in landfills, while 43.3% is recycled or reused. Spain is far behind its European neighbours when it comes to recycling. The country failed to meet the objectives of the previous Waste Law in 2011 and the European directive of 2008. Both these laws stated that before 2020, the level of reuse and recycling of domestic waste should reach at least 50 percent by weight. In 2021 in Spain, this number stood at just 35 percent, while according to the Cotec Foundation for Innovation, the EU average was 48 percent. There are standard coloured bins for recycling in regions across Spain. The blue bins are for paper and cardboard, the yellow bins are for plastic containers and tins and the green bins are for glass.
Spain is the fifth-largest producer of single-use bottles in the European Union, according to Greenpeace. And very few of them are recycled. A new tax is being imposed on single-use plastic containers, and another on waste sent to landfills or for incineration. The aim is to help Spain reduce the amount of refuse it generates to 15% of its 2010 level by 2030. The covid-19 pandemic led to a staggering use of single use plastics across various end-user industries such as medical, commercial, households, industrial & food disposables products. Further, the decline in collection rates owing to disruption in waste collections and labour shortages amidst these challenging times affected the recycling business tremendously. While the covid 19 crisis increased the consumptions of plastic products, recycling rates have not evolved in tandem with the spike in demand for plastics, which negatively affected the plastic recycling market. However, the growing awareness about the plastic pollution and stringent government measures are expected to positively impact France plastic recycling market during the forecast period. Some of the plastic waste management companies in Spain are TER PLASTIC RECYCLING,SL, Pet Company for recycling, MENZA SOLUCIONES AMBIENTALES, S.L.U, Dios Recycling Spain, S.L., Trading Plastics, Empresa de Reciclaje de Plástico ? SINTAC Recycling, Peñaplast, S.L.- Oficinas Centrales, Smurfit Kappa Recycling Spain - Málaga, Sulayr Global System, Geocycle Spain S.A. and many more.
